CFET’s Book Club Seminar on Democracy and Education

On the evening of March 31, Prof. CHENG Liang of East China Normal University, visited SOE and gave an opening lecture for the activity of "Reading Club on Center for Education Theory". With the theme of "How to Approach Dewey's Democracy and Education", CHENG analyzed the book’s history and connotation and gave detailed guidance on how to read the book. The seminar, hosted by Dr. LIU Xueliang, deputy director of the Center for Education Theory at SOE, attracted teachers and graduate students from various schools and divisions at SJTU.


Professor CHENG began by answering the question "Why should we pay attention to Democracy and Education?" He then systematically introduced the book's historical influence, and continuity of issues. Prof. CHENG also shared his own experience in reading and research, and interpreted the book from his own perspective considering the background, the framework, the theme, details in and connections of the book, and offer practical suggestions on how to read books. The seminar was a insightful one as faculty members and students benefited from it a lot.


"CFET’s Book Club" aims to deepen people’s understanding of the classical works in education both at SOE. This semester's reading is Dewey's Democracy and Education, and the schedule is as follows.
