The Next Chapter for Educational and Psychological Research, School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Successfully Held the 2nd Shanghai Forum for Education Excellence (SFEE 2023)

The 2nd Shanghai Forum for Educational Excellence (SFEE 2023) was successfully held on November 2-4, 2023, hosted by the School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The theme of this conference is "The Next Chapter for Educational and Psychological Research", and twelve renowned experts and scholars from China, the United States, France, Australia, and Finland were invited to give lectures and share insights. The conference attracted more than 180 on-site participants, and about 4,500 people watched the global live stream of the conference online.

On November 4, LIU Niancai, Distinguished Professor and Dean of School of Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, hosted the opening ceremony. ZHANG Ansheng, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and WANG Linyuan, Secretary of CPC SOE Committee, Director of Basic Education Office at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered welcoming speeches and expressed their wishes that this symposium would help scholars from home and abroad share experiences and promote in-depth discussions on the cutting-edge topics of educational and psychological researches, including AI education, data mining, student mental health promotion, and prevention and intervention of psychological problems.

Tristan Johnson, Professor and Associate Dean of Woods College of Advancing Studies at Boston College, discussed how artificial intelligence can be combined with human knowledge and experiences to play a greater role in personalized learning, improving course design, providing feedback, enhancing the role of teachers, and changing how and where students learn. LIU Sannyuya, Professor and Dean of Faculty of Artificial Intelligence in Education at Central China Normal University, Vice President of Fujian Normal University, proposed to promote human-machine collaboration and integration to achieve a more efficient model of parenting. Taking the examination platform applied in the Information Technology Proficiency Examination of Shanghai Universities as an example, KONG LingHe, Professor and Deputy Director of Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, believes that through the establishment of an intelligent categorized and graded examination platform, a teaching ecological chain oriented to the intersection of disciplines can be constructed to assess students' knowledge and evaluate teachers' teaching quality in a more scientific way.

Herb Marsh, Professor at Australian Catholic University and Professor Emeritus at University of Oxford, summarized his findings from forty years of academic self-concept research and discussed its importance for students' positive development and education. Kirsti Lonka, Professor at University of Helsinki and Director of Research Group of Educational Psychology, exchanged ideas, emphasizing the need for students to have a broader range of competencies from Finnish perspective. XIE Kui, Red Cedar Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Michigan State University Department of Counseling Educational Psychology and Special Education, believed that online learning has three important characteristics of multidimensionality, contextualization, and longitudinalism, and discussed with the participants how online learning environments can better promote students' engagement in learning.

SU Yanjie, Professor at Peking University and President of the Chinese Psychological Society, introduced her team's three studies on the relationship between adolescent interpersonal communication and mental health, emphasizing the important role of socio-emotional learning in adolescent psychological development, and encouraging educators to pay more attention to students' interpersonal relationships. GUO Xiuyan , Professor at Fudan University and Former Vice President of the Chinese Psychological Society, introduced how to understand the process of knowledge transformation from the perspective of brain science, inspiring educational researchers to deeply understand the internal mechanism of knowledge acquisition and transfer. LI Chunbo, Professor and Vice President of Shanghai Mental Health Center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, introduced the Report on the Development of China's Health Management and Health Industry, which was co-compiled by him, and advocated for the comprehensive and dynamic screening of adolescent mental health problems as well as the integration-based assessment methodology.

LIM Cherping, Chair Professor and Associate Dean of Faculty of Education and Human Development at the Education University of Hong Kong, discussed the impact of generative AI, represented by ChatGPT, on higher education teaching and learning practices and policy making, advocating that it be viewed as a student-driven digital tool that promotes more inclusive and equitable quality education. Kim Gerdes, Professor of Natural Language Processing at Paris-Saclay University, presented the Natural Language Generation (NLG) and discussed the impact of NLG technology in the field of AI-enhanced scientific writing and patent writing. ZHU Xudong, Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Director of Center for Teacher Education Research at Beijing Normal University, pointed out that global developmental education is based on the basic principle and core methodology of a community of human destiny, and hopes that education should be committed to realizing worldwide solidarity and harmony.

The closing ceremony of the conference was hosted by CHIANG Fengkuang, Professor and Associate Dean of School of Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. FENG Zhuolin, Professor and Assistant Dean of School of Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, introduced and shared the new book of the School of Education, "Education in China and the World (ECW)", and solicited the best practices of China's education stories and cases of people from colleagues around the globe. The team are also looking for best practices and examples of Chinese education stories from colleagues around the world, so that all can work together to write a wonderful chapter for the future of education.

CAO Jing , a senior teacher and Deputy Director of Scientific Research, World Foreign Language Primary School of Shanghai, CHEN Lingjun, Deputy Director and assistant professor of Center for School Psychology and Counselling, School of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, WANG Shuai, associate professor, Assistant Dean of the School of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, MA Yue, lecturer of Center for Educational Big Data and Evaluation, School of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and other 11 experts and scholars in the Workshop for School Mental Health Promotion and the Workshop for Educational Big Data and Evaluation, STEAM Education Workshop to share and exchange.

The Shanghai Forum for Education Excellence (SFEE) is an academic brand that the School of Education has focused on since its establishment, and this year is the second time to be held. In the future, the School of Education will continue to organize the conference annually in an effort to promote exchanges and cooperation in the field of global education research and make positive contributions to the progress of global education.
