Recently, Professor LIU Li participated in the Dialogue on Higher Education between China and the United States, one of the important events of the 2024 International Forum on Higher Education. As one of the important activities of the 2024 International Forum on Higher Education, the Sino-US Higher Education Dialogue is themed as “Sino-US Higher Education for the Future: Opportunities and Cooperation”. More than 50 people from more than 20 Chinese and American colleges and universities and experts and scholars attended the conference.
Professor LIU Li’s presentation was entitled “China’s Undergraduate Education Quality Assurance Policies and Overall Performance in International Comparative Perspective”. The report is an important part of Chapter 5 “China’s Undergraduate Education” of our academic brand Education in China and the World (The Story of China’s Education). This speech presents quality assurance policies of the Chinese undergraduate education sector and analyzes its development and performance through an international comparative lens based on objective statistical data.
The study found that undergraduate education plays a fundamental role in China’s higher education reform in the last four decades. Over the past 40 years of reform and opening up, under the joint efforts of the government and universities, great progress has been made in undergraduate enrollment, quality, and effectiveness. Most recently, Chinese higher educational reforms have focused on developing world-class undergraduate education with Chinese features. China ’s undergraduate education undergoes continuous reforms and strives to become internationally recognized as world-class. The concepts of “school-oriented /and student-centered”, “classification evaluation and guidance” and the approaches of/ “data-based monitoring of quality and publishing quality reports” in the Chinese higher education/ are among the first and advanced internationally, and Chinese’ experience /will provide/ excellent /practical examples/ for quality assurance/ in large higher education systems.The results of the study have positive practical significance for the development and quality assurance of undergraduate education in China’s universities, and also aroused great interest among the participants.
