A Delegation from the School of Education Travels to Finland to Engage in Collaborative Exchanges on AI and STEM Education

Recently, invited by the University of Helsinki, Finland, Professor WU Jingyi, Dean, School of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Professor CHIANG Fengkuang, Vice Dean, School of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, travelled to Finland to attend the workshop of the MoocWise: AI-enabled STEM and Well-being Education project and conduct educational exchanges and school visits. The China-Finland collaborative team held in-depth discussions on topics including AI-enabled STEM education, innovations in teacher education, and the co-development of online courses. The delegation also visited Finnish primary and secondary schools to gain first-hand insights into local STEM education practices, the application of AI in education, and experience in building innovative learning spaces.



The MoocWise project is a China-Finland higher education cooperation project funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education and implemented with participation from LUMA Centre Finland. Partner universities include the University of Helsinki, the University of Turku, Beijing Normal University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Through cross-cultural and interdisciplinary collaboration, the project aims to jointly develop a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) entitled AI in STEM and Well-being Education. LUMA Centre Finland serves as a key collaborative network for science, technology and mathematics education in Finland. It strives to connect universities, primary and secondary schools, teachers, researchers and stakeholders from all sectors of society to jointly advance innovations in science education.



During the workshop, Dean WU Jingyi and Vice Dean CHIANG Fengkuang engaged in thorough exchanges with scholars from partner universities regarding emerging opportunities and challenges for STEM education amid the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. Discussions centred on how AI tools can be meaningfully integrated into real classroom teaching, how to effectively support teachers’ instructional design, and how to foster students’ inquiry-based learning. Critical topics such as cultivating critical thinking, building ethical awareness and safeguarding student well-being in the deployment of AI applications were also emphasised.



While in Finland, Dean WU, Vice Dean CHIANG and the delegation also visited local schools, conducted classroom observations within learning spaces, and exchanged views on relevant educational practices with frontline teachers. The visit focused on visiting how digital technologies, artificial intelligence and interdisciplinary education are embedded into students’ daily learning. It also explored how interactive and open learning environments, digital media and immersive learning facilities can effectively support students’ inquiry-based learning, collaborative learning and interdisciplinary practices.





In recent years, the School of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has continuously advanced research and practice in STEM education. Leveraging the university’s comprehensive strengths in engineering technology and interdisciplinary studies, the School actively explores pathways to translate high-quality university research and educational resources into support for basic education, teachers’ professional development and the cultivation of innovative talents. This exchange visit to Finland has provided vivid case studies for the School to gain deeper understanding of global frontiers in STEM education, practical application of AI in education, and operational mechanisms for collaboration of both higher and basic education. It has also further expanded and deepened the School’s network of exchanges and cooperation with Finnish universities and educational institutions.
