On June 18, Education in China and the World, a flagship publication by the School of Education (SOE), received the prestigious “China New Development Award”from Springer Nature, a leading global academic publisher. Presented at a ceremony in Beijing, the book was the only education-focused work recognized this year. This marks it the first time that Shanghai Jiao Tong University has earned this distinguished honor.

Co-edited by Professors LIU Niancai and FENG Zhuolin, with input from 20+ SOE faculty members, Education in China and the World examines the developmental trajectories, achievements, inspiring stories and best practices to reflect realities of education transformation in China. It presents a comprehensive overview of education and its development in China, comparing Chinese education with its global counterparts using official data and statistical resources and incorporating analyses made from historical, comparative and practical perspectives.

A jointly publication between Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press and Springer, the open-access book has been downloaded over 141,000 times—the highest among this year’s winners—making its research freely available worldwide. It was also awarded Shanghai’s “Silver Dove Award” for international outreach, proving its dual impact in scholarship and global reach.

As part of the Springer Nature “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDG) program, the China New Development Awards were established by Springer Nature in 2019. The awards aim to recognize the significant research contributions of Chinese scholars in advancing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. This year’s winners, chosen from nearly 1,000 English-language works by Chinese authors, span fields from tech to ecology, each advancing solutions for a better future.
