As outlined in the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2020, 50% of all employees around the world will need reskilling by 2025. The need to future-proof people’s skills has never been so urgent with the COVID-19 pandemic bringing about unprecedented structural change in many sectors, job transitions and shift to remote working.

U21 Education Innovation Symposium was held online from February 16th to 17th, with the theme of "Teaching for Sustainability", divided into six sessions, including Introduction to Teaching for Sustainability, Teaching Approaches, Faculty Development, and Looking Beyond the Campus: Partnerships for Sustainability. Faculty members from SOE, Dr. Chen Shuhua, and Dr. Yan Xiaomei attended the symposium. 

Headway has been made in research at the School of Education this year, with seven research achievements have been awarded, breaking a record high.

The Eighth International Conference on World-Class Universities was held in October 2019. The conference theme was “World-Class Universities: Global Trends and Institutional Models”.

The Center for Education and Human Development, Graduate School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University is proud to announce the first International Conference on Education and Human Development (EHD-1) to be held on May 16-17, 2020. EHD-1 features the theme of "Pioneering Higher Education Innovation: Teaching and Learning in Research Universities".

Philip G. Altbach visited the school in Shanghai Jiao Tong University and delivered an academic lecture on global trends in higher education on Oct. 18, 2019. The school's faculty and students attended this lecture.

The School's 7th International Advisory Committee Meeting was held on October 15, 2019 . The committee members, Prof. Philip Altbach, Boston College, Global tertiary education expert Dr. Jamil Salmi, Prof. Marijk van der Wende, Utrecht University, Prof. Gerard A. Postiglione, University of Hong Kong, Prof. HUANG Futao, Hiroshima University, as well as our schools' faculty attended the meeting.

Prof. LIU Niancai attended the IREG 2019 conference, the annual conference of IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence. The IREG 2019 conference was held from May 8 to 10 in the University of Bologna, Italy. Prof. LIU chaired the first session of the IREG 2019 conference titled “Impact of Rankings on Higher Education and Public Policy”.

The Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University is pleased to announce that the 8th International Conference on World-Class Universities (WCU-8) will take place through October 15th to 17th, 2019 in Shanghai, China. The general theme of WCU-8 is "World-Class Universities: Globalization and National Models".

Marijk van der Wende is Distinguished Professor of Higher Education at Utrecht University's Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance. Her research focuses on the impact of globalization and internationalization on higher education systems, institutions, curricula, and teaching and learning arrangements. She is also an affiliate faculty and research associate at the Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE) at the University of California Berkeley. She is member of: the Academy of Europe (Academia Europaea, section behavioural sciences); the International Advisory Board of the Centre for the Study of World Class Universities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University; the Graduate Campus Advisory Board of the University of Zurich; the Advisory Board of the Centre for Global Higher Education, based at the Institute of Education, University College London; the Supervisory Board of the Open University of the Netherlands, the Board of the Rathenau Institute for Science and Technology in Society, and the Board of the Amsterdam University College Scholarship Fund (ASF Foundation).

At present, Asian Americans are the largest incoming immigrant population and the fastest growing racial group in the United States. The Immigration Act of 1965 in the U.S. and the Open Door policies in China brought forth the initial change in population. Chinese immigrants in particular comprise the largest incoming Asian population. With increasing numbers of Chinese international students entering the U.S. each year, they continue to be overlooked because of their settlement and integration within college campus communities rather than the long standing ethnic communities. However the Chinese international students face the same issues as Chinese immigrants in adapting to U.S. society. While immigrant arrival into a new country has longstanding effects for any cultural group, further research needs to be explored on present day immigrant populations using a systematic Asian American modes of incorporation framework to understand trends and help forecast ways to support immigrant and international student groups.
